Current Lighthouse Work
The “crown” we’re now seeing on the Red Queen, is the sophisticated scaffolding necessary for International Chimney (who moved the Light 4 years ago) to safely repair and restore the roof. They are taking it down to the metal, filling any cracks or divots, and then applying 3 coats of paint, the first of which is aluminum, and the final coat will be gloss black.
While the lightning rod ground wire in the ball on top of the roof has likely been replaced over the years, this may be the first time in 163 years that the roof has gotten this much attention.
The Town of Aquinnah’s Gay Head Light Advisory Board is spearheading the continuing restorative efforts that were anticipated prior to the move.
