Selectmen’s Meeting
February 13, 2018
Minutes
Attendance: Jim Newman, Chairman, Gary Haley, Juli Vanderhoop, Simon Bolin, Frank Perez, Jay Smalley, Buddy Vanderhoop, J. Madison, Town Administrator
Chairman Newman called the meeting to order at 5:30 p.m.
Julie moved to accept minutes of prior meeting and Gary seconded. The motion was approved unanimously.
Julie made a motion to allow Jim Newman to sign the block grant application for Home Improvement. Gary seconded the motion. The motion was approved without objection.
Town administrator made a recommendation that the parking space in front of the access ramp at the Town Offices be reserved for visitors and asked that appropriate signage be installed that would provide notice. Julie suggested that the matter be taken under advisement. The Board agreed.
The Selectmen reviewed and approved the warrant for the Special Town Meeting on March 6, 2018.
Buddy Vanderhoop brought up the issue of granting Giles Welch a commercial scallop license over objection of the Shellfish Committee. He pointed out that he had filed a petition charging violation of the open meeting law with the Attorney General’s office. The Selectmen deferred any action on the matter until they received communication from the AG’s office.
The Selectmen appointed Adam Gross as an alternate member of the Housing Committee by unanimous vote.
The Selectmen voted to make a payment to the Island Cultural Committee.
Simon Bolin, Fire Chief, raised the issue of regionalization of the Fire Department with the Town of Chilmark. He indicated that he “had no problem” with conducting a study to determine cost and efficiency of such action. Jim Newman suggested that the discussion should continue.
Juli suggested that a letter indicating interest in pursuing the matter be sent to the Chilmark Selectmen.
Julie raised the issue of lack of water at Cook Spring. Jay indicated that he continues to work to resolve issues related to water flow, but that weather had interfered with his “fix” for the flow.
Randhi Belain, Police Chief, informed the Selectmen that the Dodge Charger had been replaced by the Ford Explorer for use by town employees for off-island travel and is now parked at the Steamship Authority Palmer Avenue lot.
The meeting was adjourned at 6:35 p.m.
