Minutes
April 10, 2018
Attending: Jim Newman, Juli Vanderhoop, Gary Haley, Jay Smalley, Elise LeBovit, Berta Welch, Vern Welch, Mike Hebert, Bonnie Melton, Randhi Belain, Jeffrey Madison.
Meeting called to order by Chairman Newman at 5: 30 p.m.
The Selectmen approved extension of the commercial bay scallop season through the end of April. Voted by acclamation.
After discussion of appointment for a town representative on the Regional High School building committee the Board decided to place an ad on the town website and in the newspaper seeking interested applicants.
The Board approved the sale of the old police cruiser by Auctions International, Inc. of East Aurora, New York.
The Board voted to join the opioid litigation through representation of KP Law, Lauren F. Goldberg, Managing Partner.
After a lengthy discussion that included a recommendation by Chief Belain to hire an additional patrolman, the Julie Vanderhoop moved, and Gary Haley seconded a motion to approve Chief Belain’s recommendation. The vote was unanimous in favor of the hire.
The Selectmen discussed articles presented on the warrant including a late article requested by the Brian Vanderhoop, Harbormaster/Shellfish Warden to purchase a new boat for his use using Waterways Account funding. Mr. Vanderhoop was not at the meeting. Nonetheless the Board voted to recommend the article allowing it to remain on the warrant for consideration by the voters.
Bonnie Melton made a request to use the Town Hall to give a yoga class on Saturday mornings. The Board referred her to Carolyn Feltz to work out details. In addition Juli made a motion, seconded by Gary that the request be allowed so long as Bonnie can work out details with Carolyn.
Buddy Vanderhoop addressed the matter of his complaint to the Attorney General’s office that the Selectmen acted illegally when they approve the commercial scallop license application of Giles Welch. Julie moved, Gary seconded a motion taking the matter under advisement.
Julie brought up the letter written by Elaine Vanderhoop concerning the treatment of Brian Vanderhoop by the Town of Chilmark on matters related to his fishing shack in Menemsha. She expressed a desire to know more about what was going on. Jim reported that he had met with the Chilmark Selectmen to learn of their concerns and desire to mark the town line as it crosses between the Vanderhoop shack in Aquinnah and the Mayhew shack in Chilmark. Julie requested that a meeting be set up between the two towns to continue to discuss Chilmark’s concerns.
The matter of hiring temporary help for the Treasurer was discussed. Julie moved and Gary seconded a motion to allow the Town Administrator to sign an agreement with CliftonLarsonAllen, LLP of Lexington, MA to provide consulting services on matters related to temporary assistance for the Treasurer. The Selectmen voted unanimously to approve the motion.
