SEPTEMBER 5, 2018
MINUTES

Present: Gary Haley, Jim Newman, Jay Smalley, marsha Shurfrin, Jack Collins, Simon bolin, Randhi Belain, Paul Manning Alison Levy, Marsha Shurfrin, Jeff Madison Absent: Julianne Vanderhoop,

No minutes were available for discussion as Administrator’s computer is not working.

Randhi Belain indicated that he had not received any word from the Bass Derby requesting the usual suspension of parking regulations in town during the Derby. The Selectmen by acclamation decided to once again relax parking at Lobsterville, West Basin, Red Beach and the Cliff Lot to accommodate Derby fishermen from across the Island.

Selectmen voted by acclamation to make the following appointments:

Jim Newman suggested that a letter be written to all Island Boards of Selectmen to inquire if there is interest in regionalization of the Island elementary schools. Gary agreed and asked that the letter be drafted by the Town Administrator for Selectmen’s signatures.

Attorney Jack Collins presented a memo to the Selectmen relating to the Town’s responsibility to pay Compensatory Time. He indicated that the Fair Labor Standards Act sets certain standards that include a limitation on comp time to a maximum of 240 hours. Further, he informed the Board that while it is not necessary for approval by an employer to provide written approval prior to an employee being granted comp time. The approval must be given in advance and the action put on the record.

Jim moved and Gary seconded a motion to send a letter to the Tribe from the Board of Selectmen inquiring on the status of their casino proposal. The Board voted to send the letter to the best UK slots casino. Comments were received from Marsha Shurfrin and Alison Levy stating the importance of environment and wastewater review of the project. Simon Bolin stated that to his knowledge the Tribe has never adopted State Fire Code Regulations. Jim stated that his belief is that the Tribe woiuld adhere to Federal guidelines.

Jay Smalley discussed development of plans for storing sand. No action was taken.

Jim brought up the issue concerning payment of Paul Bettancourt’s bill presented in connection with burial of conduit at Aquinnah Circle. Gary said, “We’re all set with that. “ No action was taken.

Randhi Belain requested that a meeting of the Campus Planning Committee be called.

The meeting was adjourned at 5:25 p.m.
